The Benjamin Project in Action: Inspiring 5th Grade Students Making a Difference
By Sarah Screnock, GDG Educational Ambassador

Recently, I had the incredible privilege of visiting a school where The Benjamin Project was in full swing. Witnessing the phenomenal work done by the students was truly inspiring. I met with a 5th-grade class whose students fully embraced the opportunity to make a difference in their community. Their creativity and passion for service were evident in every project.
Each group of students transformed the funds they received into something truly impactful. Whether they raised additional money, donated their time, or gathered supplies, their efforts were as diverse as they were meaningful. Some teams organized school-wide fundraising events that sparked excitement and involvement from the entire student body, while others used their funds to purchase materials for hands-on service projects, inviting their peers to join in. Every group showcased exceptional creativity in approaching their chosen causes, making each project unique and far-reaching.
What stood out the most was how many of the students went beyond just fundraising. In addition to raising money, they gave their time and energy, volunteering for the causes they cared about. This level of commitment was a testament to the guidance of their inspiring teacher, whose incredible support and encouragement helped foster their passion for service. It was clear that their commitment to service was not just about financial donations, but about truly investing in their communities and making a tangible difference.
As I walked through the hallways, I couldn’t help but be inspired by the display they created—"The Benjamin Wall". This wall was filled with pictures and stories that highlighted each team’s journey and the positive impact they had on their chosen causes. The pride the students took in their work was evident, and it was clear how much they had grown through this experience.
When I spoke to the students, I was struck by their enthusiasm and how well they articulated the work they had done. They were not only proud of what they had accomplished, but they were also excited about the positive change they had contributed to their community. Their confidence and leadership skills shone through as they explained their projects, and it was evident that The Benjamin Project had helped them develop valuable skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership.
The pride wasn’t just from the students—the school’s principal and associate principal were equally proud of the impact these students had made. It was inspiring to see how much the administration supported and celebrated the students' hard work and dedication to their causes. Their encouragement helped fuel the success of the students' projects, and it was clear they were fully invested in the students’ growth and achievements.
The work these students did serves as a powerful reminder of the positive impact young people can have when given the chance to lead and give back. The Benjamin Project gives students the opportunity to explore their passions, engage with their communities, and build essential life skills, all while making a real difference.
I left that day feeling so proud of these students and excited to see what they accomplish in the future. They are proof that young people can be powerful agents of change, and I hope their efforts inspire others across the country to get involved, take action, and make a difference.
If you’re looking for a way to inspire your students and empower them to take action in their communities, I highly recommend exploring The Benjamin Project. It’s a program that allows students to make a tangible difference, develop leadership skills, and learn the power of service.
