Weekly Roundup
May 28, 2026
Check out this week's roundup of the good things going on at GDG! Stories this week feature a group in Minnesota buying books for a local non-profit, a group doing Bingo with seniors in Colorado, a student donating items to a local non-profit in Tennessee, and a scholarship reflection from a DC traveler in Ohio.
The Benjamin Project · Group Project
Elsie, Greta, & Lucy - Minnesota
My group and I decided to use our grant to buy books for a local nonprofit that provides free books to kids in our local community. We volunteered one Saturday helping the organization sort through books that would be given away. We learned from the organizer that they were in need of multi-language books. We found the best way to find the books was through an online retailer. We then met with the organizer to drop off the books. We feel like we made a small difference in the organization's overall mission.

We used our project to host a Bingo morning with prizes at Windcrest Senior Center. We called the Bingo numbers and we helped the group mark it on their board, if they didn't see it. During the middle of Bingo, we took a break for brunch. We kept the rounds going so all the prizes were gone and every senior got a prize. We think that the seniors don't get recognition all the time, or at least not as much as they should. We thought that hosting a fun game would make them happy and we were right — they loved the prizes and wanted us to come again every month. It was so funny too because they were yelling at each other for stealing others prizes and everyone got a good laugh about it. Making people that didn't feel recognized, feel recognized. We look forward to volunteering at senior centers more and making a positive impact on the community.
The Benjamin Project
Owen - Tennessee
Through my participation in the Give Club at my Middle School, I was able to donate essential items and a Kroger gift card to a local nonprofit close to my heart, Brysonn's Closet, proving that even small acts can add up to make a big difference.
Scholarship Reflection
Aiden - Ohio
I wish to thank you for the scholarship for my D.C. trip, as it was an amazing experience visiting the capital of our nation and I greatly appreciate it. I got to learn many different things about the Holocaust, Modern Art, George Washington, and many other things. I don't know how to express exactly how much gratitude I am feeling at this moment and I really appreciate the support and help for making that trip a reality. I was able to see a survivor of the Holocaust and asked her a question about what it was like while she was in hiding. I could only imagine a fraction of the amount of terror she had felt during that time period. I was also able to get a tour of the dome of the Capitol Building seeing both statues donated from Ohio. I was able to see the Vietnam War Memorial (a war in which my grandpa served in), the Korean War Memorial, and the World War II memorial. I was able to see monuments of numerous important figures like Martin Luther King Jr, FDR, Lincoln's Memorial and Jefferson's Memorial. Alongside that I was able to visit Arlington National Cemetery and see the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. On our way back from the trip we stopped at Gettysburg to drive the Union and Confederate lines, and saw where bullets and cannons had impacted certain buildings and land areas. Again I cannot express my gratitude enough to thank your organization for helping me be able to go on the trip.
