What Do Michael Jordan, Kermit the Frog, and a Broadway Show Have in Common
Traveling can be a transformative experience, especially for middle school students. The impact becomes even more profound when combined with the opportunity to explore the rich history of the United States. The Gift of Travel Scholarships have allowed countless students to embark on educational journeys that leave lasting impressions. Throughout the year, we like to highlight a few of these reflections from students who received scholarships towards their U.S. Civics Trip.
One student expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to embark on an amazing trip to Washington D.C., New York City, and four new states, made possible by a generous scholarship. Among the highlights, attending the Washington Nationals baseball game was a dream come true for this avid baseball fan, especially as major league games are a rare treat. The museums and memorials in D.C. and New York were both educational and inspiring, with the American History Museum (where he saw a Michael Jordan jersey & Kermit) and the Holocaust Museum leaving a lasting impact. Additionally, the trip fostered new friendships, exemplified by bonding with a baseball teammate during a Broadway show in New York. This journey was a blend of learning, adventure, and personal growth, leaving the student with cherished memories and deep appreciation.
His reflection captures the essence of the trip:
“This trip forced me to interact with people that I wouldn’t have normally interacted with, and through this common experience we shared, I was able to come home with some new friends. Because of the wonderful week I had, and thanks to your generosity, I am now inspired to one day help someone else have a similar experience. So, thank you.”
The stories shared by these students and their families are a testament to the profound impact of a school’s U.S. Civics Trip to Washington, D.C. These scholarships do not just fund trips; they create life-changing experiences that shape young minds' and futures.
Thank you to those who support these scholarships and make these incredible journeys possible. Your generosity is paving the way for the next generation of informed, confident, and inspired citizens.
